Criterion have released Le Samouraï in a new 1080p transfer with an MPEG-4 AVC codec. Criterion has held off on releasing Le Samouraï for years on Blu-ray and now that it is out, the biggest question is whether or not it was worth the wait. The answer is a resounding yes, but there are some minor issues as well.

The Lineup – a collection of clips from archival interviews in which Jean-Pierre Melville, Alain Delon, Nathalie Delon, Francois Perier, and Catrhy Rosier discuss working on Le Samourai. The excerpts are presented courtesy of the Institut national de l’audiovisuel in Paris, and were originally broadcast on French TV between 1967 and 1982. Jean-Pierre Melville’s paranoia thriller Le Samourai (1967) is a fascinating take on crime thrillers and underground mob assassination plots. Melville’s direction befits a classic noir with his slick and patient style. Le Samourai is like The Conversation meets The French Connection with a bit of John Wick on the side. The Criterion Collection presentation is well-done as the DVD contains wonderful interviews looking back on Melville’s career and “Le Samourai” but also interviews with the talent around that time (especially the day of the burning of Melville’s studio). In Le Samouraï, Melville merged the self-pity of the postwar American crime film with the doomy existentialism of modern French pop culture, proving two disparate worlds to have more in common than one might’ve otherwise expected.

The Criterion Collection first released Le samouraï on DVD in 2005. Although a high-definition upgrade didn't follow for 12 years, the Blu-ray retains the label's original numbering convention as spine #306. A new DVD has also been reissued to correspond with the Blu-ray. The movie comes packaged in one of Criterion's clear keepcases.

The picture has been enhanced for widescreen televisions. Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le samouraï finally receives a long overdue Blu-ray upgrade from Criterion, presented again in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 on this dual-layer disc with a 1080p/24hz high-definition encode. Tone and style are everything with Le samouraï. Poised on the brink of absurdity, or a kind of attitudinizing male arrogance, Jean-Pierre Melville’s great film flirts with that macho extremism and slips over into dream and poetry just as we grow most alarmed.

In the end, though, it is Le Samourai’s subtle, atmospheric look and feel that distinguish it, particularly as part of the noir genre, personified by Delon’s career-defining turn. The Korean Criterion Collection DVD is, however, something of a mixed bag.

I don’t think Le Samourai is as good as some make it out to be, but it is a solid flick and Criterion’s DVD is recommended. Video: How does it look? Le Samourai is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen.
